How to Apply for a Passport Online in India: Step-by-Step Guide
Applying for a passport in India starts online on the official Passport Seva portal and finishes with an in-person visit to a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). The process is simple once you know the steps. Most delays come from small errors in the form or missing documents.
Before you start
- Know which application you need. A first-time applicant applies for a fresh passport; anyone who already has one applies for a re-issue.
- Choose Normal or Tatkal. Tatkal is for urgent needs and follows its own rules and fees.
- Keep your documents ready. You’ll typically need proof of address and proof of date of birth.
- Check that your details match. Your name, date of birth and address should be consistent across all your documents.
Step 1: Register on the Passport Seva portal
Create an account on the official Passport Seva website. You’ll select your passport office based on your current residential address, so make sure the address you use is the one you can prove with documents.
Step 2: Fill in the application form
Complete the online form with your personal details, family details, address, emergency contact and, if applicable, details of any previous passport. Take your time here: spelling mistakes and mismatched details are among the most common reasons for delays.
Step 3: Pay the fee and book an appointment
Pay the applicable government fee online for your category and book an appointment slot at a PSK or POPSK. Slot availability varies by location, so it helps to check regularly if you need an earlier date.
Step 4: Visit the Passport Seva Kendra
On your appointment day, carry your appointment details along with original documents and self-attested copies. At the centre, your documents are checked, your photograph and biometrics are taken, and your application is reviewed by an officer.
Step 5: Police verification
Depending on your case, police verification may take place before or after your passport is issued. The local police may contact you or visit your address to confirm your details, so keep your documents handy and stay reachable.
Step 6: Track your application and receive your passport
You can track your application status online. Once your passport is printed, it is sent to the address in your application by post.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Different spellings of your name or a different date of birth across documents.
- Applying with an address you can’t support with valid proof.
- Forgetting to carry original documents to the appointment.
- Rushing through the form and leaving out details such as a previous passport.
- Missing your appointment without rescheduling in time.
