Tatkal Passport: Who Can Apply and How It Works
Tatkal is the priority route for applicants who need a passport urgently: for a medical emergency, sudden work travel or a family matter. It follows the same online process as a normal application, but with its own eligibility rules, documents and a higher fee.
When should you consider Tatkal?
- You have urgent travel plans and can’t wait for normal processing.
- Your passport has been lost or damaged close to your travel date.
- You need to travel at short notice for work, study or family reasons.
Who can apply?
Most Indian citizens can apply under Tatkal, but some categories of applicants and cases are not eligible. It’s important to check your eligibility before you pay the fee and book your appointment.
Documents for Tatkal
Tatkal applications usually require more supporting documents than a normal application, including proof of identity, address and date of birth. Having every document ready, and consistent, matters even more here because there is little time to fix mistakes.
How the Tatkal process works
- Register or log in on the Passport Seva portal.
- Fill in the application and choose the Tatkal scheme.
- Pay the applicable Tatkal fee online and book an appointment.
- Visit the Passport Seva Kendra with your original documents.
- Complete police verification. In many Tatkal cases this happens after the passport is issued.
Things to keep in mind
- Tatkal is faster, but no specific delivery date is guaranteed.
- Tatkal appointment slots can be limited and are released at specific times.
- Errors in your form or documents can still cause delays, even under Tatkal.
