ECR vs ECNR Passport: Meaning, Who Needs It and How to Remove ECR
If you’ve seen “ECR” on an Indian passport, or heard the term ECNR, here’s what they mean and why they matter mainly for people travelling abroad for work.
What do ECR and ECNR mean?
- ECR (Emigration Check Required): the holder needs emigration clearance from the Protector of Emigrants before travelling to certain notified countries for employment.
- ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required): the holder does not need this clearance.
Which countries does it apply to?
ECR applies to employment travel to a notified list of countries, mostly in the Gulf, West Asia and parts of South-East Asia. It does not stop an ECR passport holder from travelling as a tourist or visitor.
Who is eligible for ECNR?
Applicants who have passed Class 10 (matriculation) or higher are generally eligible for ECNR status. Some other notified categories are also eligible.
How can you tell which one you have?
On current Indian passports, only the ECR status is printed. If your passport has no ECR notation, it is treated as ECNR.
How to remove ECR from your passport
- Apply for a passport re-issue on the Passport Seva portal, selecting the change in ECR status.
- Submit proof of eligibility, such as your Class 10 or higher qualification certificate.
- Pay the applicable fee, book an appointment and visit the Passport Seva Kendra.
Eligibility for ECR deletion is decided by the passport authorities, based on the documents you submit.
