Lost or Stolen Passport? Here’s What to Do Next
Losing your passport is stressful, but there is a clear process to follow. The most important thing is to act quickly, both to protect your identity and to get a replacement started.
If you’re in India
- Report it to the police. File a report at your local police station and keep a copy of the police report or FIR.
- Apply for a re-issue on the Passport Seva portal, choosing the option for a lost or damaged passport.
- Gather your documents: the police report, proof of address and date of birth, a declaration about the loss, and a copy of the old passport if you have one.
- Book an appointment and visit the Passport Seva Kendra with your documents.
If you’re abroad
- Report the loss to the local police and keep a copy of the report.
- Contact the nearest Indian Embassy or Consulate as soon as possible.
- Depending on your situation, they may issue an Emergency Certificate so you can return to India, or help you apply for a new passport.
What about a damaged passport?
A passport that is torn, water-damaged or otherwise compromised may not be accepted for travel. The process is similar: you apply for a re-issue and submit the damaged passport along with the required documents.
Tips to protect yourself in future
- Keep photocopies and secure digital scans of your passport’s key pages.
- Note your passport number somewhere safe.
- When travelling, keep your passport separate from your wallet and other valuables.
