Passport Police Verification: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Police verification is a routine check that confirms your identity, address and background before or after your passport is issued. Knowing what to expect makes it a quick, stress-free step.
What is police verification?
After your Passport Seva Kendra appointment, your application details are shared with the police station for your address. The police confirm that you live at the address you gave and check your background. They then submit their report to the passport office.
Before or after issue?
Depending on your application, verification may be done before your passport is issued (pre-police verification) or after it is issued (post-police verification). The type that applies to you is decided by the passport authorities.
How it usually works
- An officer contacts you, or you’re asked to visit the police station.
- Your documents are checked against the details in your application.
- Your address may be confirmed through a visit or with local references.
- The officer submits the verification report.
Possible outcomes
The report is generally marked as clear, adverse or incomplete. An adverse or incomplete report can delay your passport, and the passport office may ask you for clarification or more documents.
How to prepare
- Keep the originals of the documents you used in your application ready.
- Stay reachable on the phone number you gave, and be available at your address.
- Make sure the address in your application is complete and accurate.
- Keep details of your references handy if your application asked for them.
